CragMaker Vision We see climbing growing to become one of the most popular sporting activities. We see this occurring through continued dramatic improvements in climbing facilities that will allow the nightly hosting of league based competitive events like today's mainstream sports. Climbing facilities will proliferate until they are as ubiquitous as bowling alleys, movie theaters, fitness clubs or any other popular recreational venue. The climbing gym of the future will offer near infinite route variety in a facility form factor much smaller than today's, allowing placement of facilities in high grade real estate close to the home. Company Background Our company was originally founded in1993 in Ithaca, New York by Jim Strickler while he was earning his Engineering Doctorate at Cornell. Jim had been an avid outdoor rock climber since 1979, and when Cornell built an indoor climbing wall Jim was inspired by the opportunity to bring the sport to millions of people who did not have access to a local crag. As an inventor with deep roots in optics technology, Jim designed a high tech climbing wall with tiny lights next to each hold and an electronic control system that allowed them to be independently computer controlled. Jim also put tiny weight sensors at each of the holds so that the computer could automatically record routes as they were climbed, and more conveniently score competitive events. Jim believed, however, that his vision of thousands of climbing gyms around the world, each using the new climbing walls to host league based competitive events on a nightly basis, was a few years ahead of its time. Six years later, LED technology had progressed to the point where ultrabright LEDs, 100 times brighter than those of the original PowerWall, were available at reasonable cost. In 1999, one year after its patent issued for the PowerWall, CragMaker resumed its goal of modernizing the climbing gym and growing the popularity of this great sport
